Poetry Out Loud is a national poetry recitation competition for high school students. All Nebraska high schools are invited to participate each year in this exciting educational program.
We at Nebraskans for the Arts support Nebraska Arts Council by obtaining the prices for the competition, and creating the certificates for finalists and semi-finalists, as well as lending other event support.
Nebraska’s 2023 Poetry Out Loud competition was conducted in person at the Sheldon Art Museum. The state finals were held on March 12, 2023, with the following results:
State Champion:
Amelia C. Escalante, Bellevue West High School, Bellevue
1st Runner-up:
Madeleine Smith, Marian High School, Omaha
2nd Runner-up:
Bryant Peck, Wisner-Pilger High School, Wisner
NATIONAL POL FINALS
Nebraska’s state champ competed with students from all fifty states at National Finals in May 2023. Amelia placed 4th out of the 18 states in her region, and received an honorable mention!
The 2023 Poetry Out Loud trophies are made with handblown glass created by Nebraska artists.
